Rangnick explains Ronaldo’s absence for Man Utd in derby loss

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to miss full training due to his hip injury.

The Manchester United icon was unable to train last Friday due to the continuing problem and missed the team’s 4-1 loss to local rivals Manchester City at the weekend.

Ronaldo was not at Etihad for the Premier League clash as he returned home to his native Portugal where he received further treatment.

The 37-year-old was back at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday morning but did not train with the squad; He was assessed by United’s medical team and undertook a light session, followed by treatment on the affected area by club physios.

Ronaldo is desperate to be ready for the team’s next match against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday night – even with caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick fearful of rushing him.

The Red Devils could slip to seventh place in the Premier League if they lose to Spurs. They are currently fifth, one behind Arsenal in fourth after playing three more games.

But there are just six days left until United welcome Spanish champions Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford for the second leg of their last 16 Champions League clash. The first leg in Madrid ended 1-1 thanks to a late goal from Anthony Elanga.

Although he is good to face Spurs, Rangnick and his team fear that Ronaldo will struggle to recover to face Diego Simeone’s side.

Ronaldo, who has 15 goals to his name this season, has reportedly suffered from a hip problem for the past two months.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored just one Premier League goal since the start of the calendar year.

He missed the FA Cup clash with Aston Villa and the subsequent league game against the same opponents in January due to his hip complaint.

Speaking after City’s loss, United legend and former Ronaldo team-mate Roy Keane was unconvinced by the veteran striker’s diagnosis.

“There seems to be something more to Ronaldo’s situation,” Keane said. “The manager comes out talking about something about his hip flexor but the man is a machine and rarely gets hurt.

“But every once in a while he comes out that about his hip flexor, it just doesn’t sit well with me.”

Asked about Ronaldo’s injury, Rangnick said: “I have to believe my medical service.

“My doctor came to see me on Friday morning before training and told me that Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t train because of problems with his hip flexor and it was the same thing on Saturday and that’s why he couldn’t make the team.”

Striker Edinson Cavani also missed United’s loss to City with a groin injury, despite training in the days leading up to the match.

“Edi has been training well for the last three days but, in the end, he didn’t feel good enough to play,” Rangnick added.

“What does it help if I tell you it’s frustrating? It’s just a fact if the players tell the doctor and the medical service that they are injured and can’t play.

“I have to accept it as a manager… I can’t force a player to play if he thinks he’s unavailable because he has an injury.”

Cavani should be fit for Saturday’s encounter with Antonio Conte’s men.
