The Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Usman Baba, has banned the use of SPY license plates by vehicle owners nationwide.

He said it was to prevent the continuous disregard of traffic rules.

The Force’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said so in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

The IG said the ban was applicable to all road users in the country without exception.

According to him, it is also in continued disregard of existing laws guiding use of the road by individuals hiding under SPY police license plate privileges.

Baba ordered police and officers from other security agencies attached to VIPs who use SPY license plates to ensure prompt compliance or risk arrest for violations.

He ordered all state police commissioners (CPs) and the FCT, and their assistant inspectors general of police (AIGs) to give full effect to the directive.

Baba ordered AIGs and CPs to secure the confiscation of all SPY license plates currently in use without the arrest of owners of such vehicles.

He said an arrest could be made when these vehicles were with police officers or officers from other security agencies on an escort mission.

The IG instructed the police officers to respect the rights and privileges of citizens in accordance with the laws of the country and in accordance with international best practices in accomplishment of the mission.

He called on other security agencies and the public to cooperate with the police to enforce the ban, adding that the measures were aimed at strengthening the country’s internal security. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
