The Training & Consultancy division of KOTUG International (KOTUG) and U.S. maritime education and training provider, Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI), have entered into a strategic partnership to provide exclusive training for tug captains, crews of ships, river barge shippers and pilots by certified KOTUG trainers at SCI training centers across the United States. The partnership was officially kicked off by hosting Moran Towing Corporation for a week of ASD Operator Training assisted by Riven Marine Founder, Captain Jay Rivera.
Since 2019, SCI, Riben Marine and the Dutch company KOTUG have provided training for ship pilots and tug captains, before carrying out feasibility studies for new wharf and waterway projects, along the coast of Gulf of Texas.
For the week of May 16 – May 20, 2022, this partnership has come together to conduct its first class Basic Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tug for Moran Towing Corporation, among the largest fleet towing and tug operations in the States -United.
The course was led by Captain Xavier Blejan, KOTUG Master Trainer, assisted by Riven Marine Founder, Captain Jay Rivera. SCI staff served as facilitators and subject matter experts. The course has brought together some of the best training resources available – expert tug trainers, ship handling experts, pilot-grade custom tug models and state-of-the-art Kongsberg simulators – delivering high-impact instruction. and quality for the Moran team. ASD operators.

KOTUG Training App for Advanced Safety Additionally, SCI will be implementing the KOTUG Training App, the latest feature from KOTUG to take training to the next level by monitoring the knowledge and skill levels of all sailors. The app detects potential skill gaps at an early stage and records progress as a result of training. This gives valuable insights into tailoring one-on-one training that is highly motivating and improves overall safety, KOTUG said.
